Ashoka + BYU?

BYU was honored to host a visit from Ashoka this last week. Ashoka is the world’s leading community of social innovators, supporting and collaborating with more than 3,000 Ashoka Fellows. AshokaU, the university outreach program for Ashoka, designates “Changemaker Campuses” that excel in promoting and teaching social innovation across the country. BYU may be in line to join the ranks thanks to the years of hard work from so many on-campus organizations SILC helps promote.

Ms. Michèle Leaman, Changemaker Campus Director, visited with faculty and students (including SILC associates) to gain a feel for our campus and the work we’re doing. One of her main messages to BYU students looking to make a difference was the scope of our focus. She said AshokaU Changemaker Campuses cannot be content with only fostering social innovation on their own campus, but must strive to change attitudes everywhere until all universities are similarly motivated to promote social innovation. While Ms. Leaman’s visit was the first from AshokaU related to BYU’s potential as a Changemaker Campus, AshokaU’s Executive Director, Marina Kim, spoke at last year’s TEDxBYU conference.
